Kolkata: The commodity exchanges have delivered only 10% of their total contracts made in 2009-2010, which smacks of a scam of more than Rs 4.45 lakh crore, alleged BJP national president Nitin Gadkari.
Gadkari, in the city for the first time after becoming party president, addressed a citizens’ convention where he made the allegation. He said the total volume of futures trading done by the commodity exchanges across the country so far in 2009-2010 amounts to Rs 4.50 lakh crore but deliveries worth only Rs 4,500 crore have been made during the period. The rest of the transactions have been all carried out on paper.
“ I have gathered every document to prove this as a scam and soon a BJP team will meet the Prime Minister to give him a presentation about it,” Gadkari said. He said futures trading has been hugely responsible for the price rise and that the UPA government has allowed speculators and manipulators to take control of the economy.
He said the BJP would hold a huge rally in Delhi on April 21 to protest against price rise and expected more than 25 lakh people from across the country to participate in it.
He lashed out at the government for wrong economic policies pointing out that it had procured wheat from the domestic market at Rs 11.50 a kg and imported it at Rs 19.50 a kg. While prices of sugar a few days ago had touched nearly Rs 50 a kg, the government exported it at Rs 12.50 a kg till it was banned, Gadkari said.
He said Congress workers were adopting an anti-Amitabh Bachchan stand to please Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
“ It is unfortunate that the Maharashtra chief minister had to skip an important programme in Pune since he was supposed to share the dais with Amitabh Bachchan, which would have displeased Sonia Gandhi,” Gadkari said.
He said the country has 1000 political parties, of which only 50 were into serious politics and of them 45 were family governed. Citing his example, Gadkari said BJP was the only party, in which a mere grass root level worker could rise up to the level of the president.
